This week the Sisi Film Lab training commenced in Gulu bringing new talent and passion for the filmmaking industry in Northern Uganda. The training gathered students from totally different backgrounds, offering them space to learn film and we are excited to say that they are eager to turn their dreams into a reality.
Film is more than just story telling for many creatives, it is a means of expression as it brings dreams and emotions that would have been bottled up to life. Andama Jimmy studied sciences but has found his true calling in film.
“Film speaks my language. Much as I did sciences, I don’t feel at home in that field. Arts is my place, and film easily brings my poetry to life.” His story says a lot as many have discovered that their passion lies in the arts, despite their academic backgrounds.

Our students have great expectations for this training, hoping to gain skills in all aspects of filmmaking. Agenorwoth Moreen is excited with what the scriptwriting class will offer and confident that by the end of the training she will have gained the necessary knowledge in it. “I want to learn script writing and believe by the end of the training I will have learned a lot.”

Similarly, Odoch Steven is looking forward to mastering multiple areas of film. “I believe in greatness and thus expect only greatness from this training. I appreciate Sisi for supporting the Northern film industry. We’ve been left out a lot when it comes to sponsorship and other opportunities. Sisi Film Lab should not stop with us—it should continue for future generations.”

For others, filmmaking means more than just a skill—it is more personal, telling impactful films based on true stories about their lives. Okuru Nelson is here to bring his life experiences to the screen. “Growing up with my father, only us, I have many stories I would love to pen down and see unfold in a film.”

For Ronald Oluba, joining the training is an exciting new journey. “I just finished high school, and here I am. The love for the camera led me here. Some detours you take in life can become your permanent career, so this is a very good opportunity for me.”

All these students coming from different professional backgrounds but united by their love for film. Oyet, a teacher by profession, is taking a step into the filmmaking world. “I’m starting from zero, but by the end, I’ll have the knowledge to push me forward to becoming the scriptwriter I want to become.”
Cinematography enthusiast Odera Santo aka Santana is excited about the opportunities ahead which hold, him being one of the best filmmakers in the region. “I love film. Cinematography is something I crave. I’m so passionate about it, so I felt I should do something about it. Sisi is here, and I have a lot of expectations for this training. I expect to be one of the best filmmakers in the region.”

Sisi Film Lab’s training is into building dreams of aspiring filmmakers empowering them to reach heights. It is here to cultivate fresh talent and build a thriving film industry in Northern Uganda. As these young creatives start on their journey, their passion and commitment reveal that the region is taking its place in Uganda’s growing film Industry and Sisi is here to be a steppingstone for those that have film dreams.
