From Cartoons to Film

As I sit here, reflecting on my journey as an artist, I am transported back to the early days when my love for art first began. I was just a young boy in primary three, spending hours on end drawing cartoons like Super Strikers and Ben 10. Those simple sketches sparked a passion that would only continue to grow as I grew older.

My love for art led me to seek out opportunities to hone my craft. In 2014, I joined InMovement, a space where I could learn from fellow artists and experiment with new techniques like graffiti. It was an incredible experience, surrounded by like-minded individuals who shared my passion. Our drawing sessions were always filled with laughter and creativity, pushing each other to new heights.

As I entered high school, art became my solace, my happy place. It was the one subject that I looked forward to, and at times, I wished it was the only thing I studied. My teachers encouraged me to pursue my passion, and I was lucky to have their support.

After senior six, I dedicated two years to focusing on my art. I taught myself digital art and illustrations, spending hours upon hours perfecting my skills. It wasn’t easy, but the sense of accomplishment I felt with each new piece was incredible. My creativity flourished, and I began to explore different forms of art.

I soon found myself venturing into jewelry making, opening my own brand, Zion Originals. I created wrap armbands, necklaces, and even took on interior projects like murals for spaces. It was an exciting time, and I loved the freedom that came with being my own boss.

But then, something unexpected happened. During the lockdown, a collaboration with a filmmaker friend sparked a new interest in storytelling. As the storyboard artist, I discovered a new passion, and when I saw the Sisi Film Training call on Instagram, I knew I had to apply.

Studying film has been an incredible journey, and I’m excited to explore the process of bringing a story to life. From scriptwriting to editing, I’m learning it all, and I’m loving every minute of it.

As I look back on my journey, I realize that art has been the constant in my life. It’s the thread that has woven together my passions, my interests, and my dreams. And I know that no matter where this journey takes me, art will always be at the heart of it.
